Louis was an itinerant farmer that could not read or write. Other relatives said that he and his brothers also worked as loggers, and river-jacks (keeping logs moving down river). He came to the USA in about 1855 and settled in western Minnesota in Mcleod County. Census show that he rented farm land. It is not known how he met Marceline but they were married in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1858 and had three children born there prior to moving back to Mcleod county according to the 1865 Minnesota census. It was said that he farmed a plot south of St. Paul called "Pigs Eye Island. He was back in Mcleod county according to the 1870 US census. Together they had 14 children and Marceline died about a month after the last child was born dead. Louis lived about eleven years longer. The census shows his wife Marceline Guimont's family was living on a neighboring farm using the changed spelling of the name, Demoe or sometimes Demo.
