He was employed by Tristate Telephone; Northwestern Bell for 47 years. He started as a water boy for the horses and later became a lineman.

He told the story and had an article was written about his horse "Charly." When they were stringing lines in southwestern Minnesota, he would climb a pole, set the line and whistle. "Charly" would pull the wagon down the road, paying the line out from the reel and stop and wait at the next pole. He would go down to it and start the procedure over. Even though he had a very limited education he was able to wire complex switch-boards.

In his retirement years he gardened on the lot next to his home on 870 Newcomb St. Even though the toll of all of his falls from telephone poles had him hurting, he worked from morning until dark in his garden plot. He was the free farmers market for the neighborhood. His yard was full of flowers and manicured to perfection.
