DAN HENRY ALTIS
Dan Henry Altis was born in Redwood, Roanoke County, Virginia, July 10, 1885 and died at Texas County Memorial Hospital, Houston, Missouri Sept. 5, 1970 having attained the age of 85 years, one month and 25 days.
He was the fifth of 11 children born to Samuel and Harriett Altis and moved with his family to a homestead north of Cabool, Missouri, when four months old.
Dan was married to Alma Ross April 10, 1911. She died six years later, June 3, 1917. He married Mable Ninetta Gill June 12, 1919. She also preceded him in death February 23, 1969.
Dan professed a saving faith in Jesus Christ as a young man and joined the Hamilton Creek Church. Nov. 2. 1930 he became a charter member of the Providence Freewill Baptist Church, was ordained to the deacon board and served the church faithfully in that capacity until his death.
Two sons preceded him in death in childhood leaving three sons, Vern and Roscoe of Cabool and Clifford of Independence, Missouri, and one daughter Doris Altis of Independence, Missouri to survive him. Also surviving are six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, two sisters, May Crossland and Ada Schoers both of Cabool, three brothers Willard and Paul of Cabool and Ezra of Columbia, Missouri and many friends.
Services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Providence Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Ezra Butts, Ramey Gass and Don Ratterree officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery under direction of Elliott-Gentry Funeral Home.
The family changed their name from Altick to Altis when they moved from VA to MO in late 1885.
