Only a brief life story of Mary Melinda Cummins, who was the daughter of Robert and Anna Shipp. She was born in Dent County, Missouri, near Montauk, on June 7, 1857; departed this life at the home of her son Ballard, in Raymondville, Mo., October 1, 1942; age at time of her departure 85 years, 3 months and 24 days.

She was converted and baptized in early life, thereby being able to set an example of christian living for her family all along the way. She was united in marriage to Malon Cummins on January 1, 1875. They were permitted to walk life's pathway some 63 years. Four years ago he preceded her in death. Of this union there were ten children, five sons and five daughters; five have passed on before to greet her in that homecoming in the sky. Those who have preceded her are Joseph, Loretta, William, Dollie and an infant daughter. Those who survive are Ballard, Mrs. Daisy Long and John, all of Raymondville; Richard, of St. Louis, and Mrs. Minnie Cook of Dewey, Oklahoma. She has been a mother to one granddaughter, who was left without a mother, and no doubt her love and care for her has been as great as for her own. This granddaughter is now Mrs. Artie Nicholas. She has had the care of many orphan children, always extending a hand of welcome to all who came her way and needed help, thereby living up to the standard of christian living as given by James, who said, "True and undefiled religion before God is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction and keep one's self unspotted from the world."

She had one own brother and one sister, Rufus and Martha Shipp, who preceded her in death. She also had four half-sisters, Mrs. Anna Sutton, deceased; Mrs. Ida Williams, Licking; Mrs. Nevada Smallwood, Raymondville; Mrs. Emma Smallwood, Raymondville; and one half-brother, Sherman Shipp, who passed away a few years ago.

So many of her loved ones have crossed on to the other side that her interests have been there, perhaps more than here. Besides the above mentioned relatives, she leaves 31 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and other relatives, and many friends, who loved her and are sad because of her passing. Being a true friend, it was not difficult for her to make friends.

The sun has set, on another of our members;
She has folded her hands, in peaceful quiet slumber;
She beckons her loved ones today to join her in that land;
Asks that you make your preparation here so you may walk
Heaven's streets hand in hand.

Funeral services were held Friday, October 2, 1942, at the Friendship church, conducted by Mrs. Sadie Miles, with burial in the church cemetery under the direction of the Elliott Funeral Home.

Editor's note -- The Editor of the Herald joins in the sorrow of relatives, neighbors and friends in the passing from earth to Heaven of this dear old pioneer woman. She was wonderful in her memory and held the strong tie of many friendships, the Herald and Editor holding their place in this circle.
