Dr. Alvah C. Bridges youngest son of Rev. William & Virginia Snoddy Bridges, was born in Franklin County, Missouri December 29, 1869 and passed away at his home in Kahoka on Sunday, September 5, 1937.
Dr. Bridges was educated in the grammar schools of Franklin county and the Warrensburg state normal and later entered the St. Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons. There he received his medical degree in 1899.
After graduation he began the practice of medicine in Kahoka, and he also bought a half interest in the principal drug store of the town, and became an officer in the National Association of Retail Druggists.
Dr. Bridges was an active member in the Masonic Lodges, having filled all the important offices in both the Blue lodge and the Royal Arch. He also served as Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star lodge.
Dr. Bridges volunteered for service during the World War and was made First Lieutenant of the Medical Reserve Corps of the United States Army. He was also a charter member of the Kiwanis club and took an active part in its proceedings.
He was converted in early manhood and united with the Kahoka Baptist Church where he remained an active and energetic member until called to his reward. At the time of his death he was a trustee of the church, a member of the Baptist Brotherhood, and an earnest worker in the Laidley's Men's Bible Class of which he was assistant teacher for some time.
He was a great lover of music and became a talented singer and willingly gave the benefit of this talent to the church and community, being a member of the choir for many years and being called upon many times to sing at funerals.
On October 1, 1900 he was united in marriage to Miss Kate Robinson. To this union were born four children, Frank, Miss Jean, Ralph and Mrs. Virginia Matuszeski, of Wilmington, Delaware.
He is survived by his faithful wife, and four children above named, two grandchildren, John and Alice Jean Matuszeski, also four brothers and one sister, viz: Dr. A.D. Bridges, of Portland, MO; Mrs. J.R. Armstrong of Willow Springs, MOp; William and Dr. J.R. Bridges of Kahoka, and Dr. John Bridges of Bolivar, MO; one brother and three sisters having preceded him in death. He also leave many more distant relatives and a wide circle of friends to mourn his untimely departure.
Funeral services were held from the First Baptist Church at Kahoka, conducted by Rev. W.M. Cooney, assisted by Rev. Ralph Couch, pastor of the church, Wednesday, September 8, at 2 p.m.
