Robert Durham was born 1852 in Clayton, Johnston County, NC, the 5th of 8 known surviving children (4 boys/4 girls) born to wealthy farmer Henry "Harry" Durham and his wife, Martha Shaw.
He was the paternal grandson of James B. Durham & Drucilla Tomlinson of Johnston County; and gr-grandson of Samuel Durham & Mary Parker of Smithfield, Johnston County. He is a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, John Durham I. (c. 1630-1695) who immigrated from England to the Colony of Maryland c. 1660.
Robert never married and died 1890 at age 38.
