Madison Durham was born 1848 in Clayton, Johnston County, NC, the 4th of 8 known surviving children (4 boys/4 girls) born to wealthy farmer Henry "Harry" Durham and his wife, Martha Shaw.

He was the paternal grandson of James B. Durham & Drucilla Tomlinson of Johnston County; and gr-grandson of Samuel Durham & Mary Parker of Smithfield, Johnston County. He is a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, John Durham I. (c. 1630-1695) who immigrated from England to the Colony of Maryland c. 1660.

In 1870, the 30 year old married 26-year old Dora Barnes of Clayton, daughter of Solomon Barnes & Nancy Spencer. Madison opened a dry goods store in Clayton, which he operated until 1905, later "retiring" to his farm. In 1903, his sister, Emma, became the 3rd wife of Clayton's popular Sheriff, Jesse T. Ellington.

The couple would become parents to 3 known children: Laura Ella (1879-1884), Carson H. (c. 1881), and Lindon/Lydon M. (c. 1887).

Madison died in 1923 at age 74. His wife of 45 years survived him 10 years, passing in 1933, just a few weeks shy of her 81st birthday.

Their daughter, Ella, who died in 1884 before her 5th birthday, is buried in Maplewood Cemetery.
