He was the paternal grandson of James B. Durham & Drucilla Tomlinson of Johnston County; and gr-grandson of Samuel Durham & Mary Parker of Smithfield, Johnston County. He is a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, John Durham I. (c. 1630-1695) who immigrated from England to the Colony of Maryland c. 1660.
When Civil War was declared in North Carolina, Harris and his younger brother William both enlisted. Harris signed on with the local regiment, the "Clayton Yellow Jackets", NC 24th, later serving with Co. I of this regiment. The 24th was active from the Seven Days' Battles to Fredericksburg, fought at Plymouth and Drewry's Bluff, then participated in the Petersburg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign.
Harris died in 1861, just barely into his enlistment. He was only 27 years old.
