Eugene Brown, age 90 of Cantonment, Florida, a good man, wonderful husband and loving father, passed on to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Saturday, April 11, 2009.
"Gene" was the sixth child of eight born to Eugene Fuller Brown and Helen Elizabeth Dobbins Brown.
He was born in Marshfield, Missouri, October 26, 1918.
His parents homesteaded in South Dakota and Montana prior to his birth, settling in nearby Northview to farm and raise their large family of four boys and four girls.
Eugene senior died when his name sake was six years old. Gene's mother, "Bobbo", blinded by measles, kept the farm and family together through the Great Depression.
He joined the United States Navy in 1938 and retired from active duty in 1962, USNAS Pensacola his last duty station. He crossed the Equator at longitude 37 degrees West, April 17, 1939, while serving on the heavy cruiser, USS Quincy. He was an aviation machinist mate serving in blimp, PBN, and carrier-based fighter aircraft squadrons during his naval career. He is a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Following retirement as a chief petty officer, he worked as a machinist at the Naval Air Rework Facility, Pensacola, and retired from civil service in 1980.
During World War II, his older sister, Esther, who became an US Army nurse, introduced him to her nursing school roommate, Maxine Lucy Boatwright. They fell in love and married October 5, 1943, at the First United Methodist Church of Springfield, Missouri. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past fall.
He is survived by his bride and their five children: Fuller, Cynthia, Lydia, John and Lou Ellen; one sister, "Sis"--Helen Elizabeth Deck of Springfield, Missouri; one nephew and his family: Charles, Nadia and daughter Liana Brown of Long Beach, California (Charlie is the son of Gene's eldest sibling, Lincoln); four nieces: Sis's daughter, Gale Shipman Alder of Springfield, Missouri, and Esther's three daughters, Mary, Elizabeth and Katherine of New Orleans, Louisiana; two son-in-laws: Frank Elliott (Cynthia's husband) of Jackson, Tennessee, and Yancy Spencer III (Lydia's husband) of Pensacola, Florida; two daughter-in-laws: Judy Brown (Fuller's wife) of Pensacola, Florida, and Cindy Brown (John's wife) of Ridgecrest, California; nine grandchildren: Melanie Cummings, Allan Elliott, Yancy Spencer IV, Abigail Pruett, Sterling Spencer, Katie Walker, Emily Brown, Jamie and Russell Brown; and six great grandchildren: Duncan, Quinn, Britney, Roman, Juliette, and John Thomas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sister-in-laws: Lincoln and Chartres Brown, John Curtis and Lela Brown, and "Babe" and Ginnie Brown; sisters and brother-in-laws: Frances and George McDermott, Esther and Jim Thom Titterington, and Florine Brown; niece and nephew: infant Teresa McDermott and Tommy Titterington.
To his children he is known as "Dad" or "Daddy". To his grandchildren he is affectionately called "Papasan". To his lighter-than-air shipmates he is "Jungle Jim". For the last two years of his life, he is "Mr. Brown" as resident under the caring staff at the Specialty Center skilled nursing facility. To all, his characteristic handle bar mustache, grin and large skillful hands will be missed.
Visitation will be held at Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home Chapel, Wednesday, April 15, 2009 from 6:00-8:00PM. Funeral service will be conducted at Trinity Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, Cantonment, Florida, where Gene was a founding member, Thursday, 10:30AM, April 16, 2009, followed by internment service, 12:30PM, at Barrancas National Cemetery.
