Beloved Mother and Grandmother passed away quietly on April 11, 2009, in Athens, Texas. Ava Nell was born in Van Zandt County on July 31, 1914, to George and Hattie Stringer. She attended Martins Mill Schools and graduated from Van High School. "Nell" was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens, Texas. She worked weekly as a volunteer at the Athens Food Bank for many years. As a member of the Athens Women's Clubs she was recognized as a wonderful hostess, excellent cook, competitive golfer, an avid gardener, and an active quilter.Ava Nell was preceded in death by William E. (Billy) Neill, her husband of 57 years. She and Billy settled in Borger, Texas after numerous assignments with the Texas Highway Department. Upon Billy's retirement from professional engineering in 1970 they returned to Athens to be near their childhood home. She is survived by a sister, Christine Norris, three children, George Neill, Harriette Forrester, and Billie Nell Neill, seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, many other family members and close friends.A reception will be held for family and friends at the First Baptist Church of Athens, Texas on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will follow at the Cooper Funeral Home in Athens, Texas from 1:00 until 2:00. Graveside rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Athens City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dr. Allan Alexander, Richard Alexander, Aaron Alexander, Jeffrey Forrester, Tommy Mitchell, Jeremy Neill, Jason Kennedy, Adron Neill and John Norris.
