He came to Texas with his parents in 1846. He joined Dove Baptist Church in Caldwell, Texas in Feb. 1847 and was dismissed by letter July 1851. In 1861 he enlisted in the Civil War in Company H, 2nd Texas Infantry and was sent to Galveston. On account of sickness he was soon obliged to return home, after which he was engaged principally on detached service. He had a wooden leg but it is not known if this was due to the war or an accident before the war. He was an excellent wood worker and made beautiful furniture. He was a farmer, a Democrat and a Baptist. He resided at the old McClanahan homestead with his mother where he had 100 acres of land, 48 acres in cultivation. On Dec 7, 1871 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Ann Johnson who came from Alabama with her parents after the close of the Civil War. To this union were born four children. Sally Ora, Milton Lee, Lou Emma and Bertha Mae. Dollie died in 1893 and James Harvey died 12 June 1893. They are buried in Old Prospect Cemetery (Now called Prospect Cemetery) in Lee County Texas
