Martha Jane Ennis
The remains of Martha Jane Ennis wife of Wesley Ennis of North Battleford were conveyed to Wilkie last Monday for burial, in Wilkie Cemetery. The late Mrs. Ennis came to this district with her husband in 1906 and was one of the earliest settlers.
Six years ago she and her husband removed to North Battleford after giving up farming near Wilkie.
She passed away at her home on Monday last after an illness of some six months.
The funeral was arranged to take place at the United Church on Wednesday, but owing to deep snow it was not possible for members of the family to reach here by road from North Battleford on that day.
A postponement was necessary to Thursday afternoon, October 31, at which Rev CH Whitmore pastor of the United Church conducted the service.
The late Mrs. Ennis had reached the age of 77 years and six months, besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters Mrs. S. Buxton and Mrs. Lawrence Johnston of this district, and four sons, Wilbur and J.B Ennis of Tisdale; Norman and Wellington of North Battleford.
One daughter died in the year 1908 and was buried in Wilkie Cemetery and one son Victor was killed overseas during the Great War.
The pallbearers were: Geo. Allan, WH Shaw, A Imrie, A. L. Thompson, James Thorpe, and H A Burkholder. Interment was made in Wilkie Cemetery.
Two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Ennis celebrated their golden wedding. They were old-timers of the district, arriving before the trails to this then-new country were well marked out. They knew nothing of travel comfort such as exists today and were obliged to make long and tedious journeys by slow ox team for needed supplies, depending often upon a sense of direction to reach their destination.
They made many friends in the district in which they lived and many will regret to learn of the passing of another hardy pioneer.
