In 1850 & 1860 John's parents lived in Salem, Wyandot, Ohio. Sometime between 1860 & 1870 the family left OH "to escape cold weather" & moved to MO. On June 13, 1870, they lived in Lebanon, Cooper Co, MO. John & Samuel were 15 years old.
John's older brother, Henry "Rufus," married Alzona Bell who lived nearby in Otterville on July 28, 1870, To help support his young wife, he was hired as a drover herding cattle from Sedalia, located a few miles from them, to Henrietta, Clay Co, TX. Rufus was impressed with the range land in TX, and no doubt encouraged his parents to move to Henrietta with him, which they did a short time later. His son was born there in 1872.
Rufus and Alzona returned to Otterville sometime before 1874 where their second child was born. John worked with Rufus and went home with him at the end of the cattle drives. It was here that he became acquainted with Alzona's niece, Cynthia Vance, who lived nearby with her Bell grandparents and sometimes helped Alzona with the children.
Rufus and John received word that their mother had died from burns on October 23, 1875, as a result of fighting a field fire at her home. When Rufus & Alzona moved back to Henrietta, Cynthia went with them & was married to John on January 20, 1878.
Descendants have provided many heart warming stories about John & Cynthia's life in TX where their five children were born. From TX they moved to Johnson Co, AR, in 1887 & bought a farm on the Big Piney near Fort Douglas. John died from typhoid fever on March 6, 1888, and was buried on the farm.
