During the American Revolution, Robert served under Captain Jacob Barnett and Colonel Hill and was at Huck's Defeat. In addition, he served under Lieutenant Humphrey Barnett at Fort Grandby on the Congaree during 1781 and was under Captain James Thompson and Colonel Bratton but was detailed under Colonel Wade Hampton at Goose Creek Bridge and Quarter House on 15 July 1781.

He married Jane Barron on 3 December 1784.
