Dawn Ross, a g-granddaughter of Mattie, has furnished the nice photograph. The original was a small tin type that was made of her when she was a young girl. It is the only photo in existence, and Dawn had a portrait made from it in case the tin type was lost.
Martha was the 9th and last child of William & Nancy (Burchett) Self. She married David Wise Gillenwater in Russell Co, VA, on July 10, 1883. They had four children: William Selfe, Carl Conklin, Glenn Newland, and an unnamed baby who died on the day of its birth.
Martha and David lived in Craig, Holt Co, MO, for a period of time and were there for the birth of Carl (1890)and Glenn (1892). They were in Alpha, Hamblen Co, TN, when their last child was born on July 20, 1902. It was the first family member to be buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Mattie died on January 16, 1903, and was buried near their infant daughter. Some time later David married Jessie Crawley, and they moved to OR. David died on February 1, 1946, and his body was shipped back to Alpha to be buried beside his beloved wife, Mattie. Dawn said that he also has a tombstone in OR.
