In 1993 new grave markers, including including those for William & Nancy, were placed, the graves cleaned, and a new fence built. Those who tackled the project were direct descendants:

William's parents were:
Burwell Self 1785 – 1860
Elizabeth Hay 1797 – 1849

His siblings were John, Thomas, Betsy, & Henry.

William married Nancy Burchett, daughter of Leonard Burchett & Alcey (Phillips) Burchett.

Nancy gave birth to Melissa Hopkins, Wilson Vermillion,
Ailsey B., Elizabeth, Leonard Burchett, Tennessee "Temperance" O., Charles "Charlie" Beauchamp, & Martha "Mattie" Virginia.

On September 9, 1850,
William Self, a farmer, & his wife, Nancy, ages 37 & 31, lived on a farm valued at $2100 in District 54, Russell Co, VA. Their children were Malissa, age 9; Wilson, 7; Alcy, 4; & Elizabeth, 1.

William's mother, Elizabeth, age 55, lived with them. Also, his brother, Henry M, age 21.

The record showed that William was born in Halifax Co, VA; Nancy in NC. William's mother was born in Charlotte Co, VA.
Henry was born in Russell Co, VA.

By the following date Nancy had given birth to three more children, and they were doing well financially.

On October 15, 1860,
William & Nancy, ages 44 & 41, were living on a farm in Russell Co, VA; They picked up their mail at Bickleys Mills. Their real estate was valued at $2500 & personal estate, $957. Their children were Melisa H., 19; Wilson V., 17; Ailsay B., 14; Elizabeth, 11; Leonard B., 8; Temperance C., 5; & Charles B., 3.

The Civil War had ended in 1865 reducing the value of their land and personal wealth. Nancy had given birth to one more child.

On August 18, 1870,
William & Nancy, ages 56 & 51, were living on their farm in Castlewood, VA. They received their mail at the Lebanon post office. Their son, Wilson, age 27, lived nearby with his wife & children. The Civil War had decreased the value of their land & personal wealth, now valued at $800 and $645. Children still at home were Elizabeth, age 21; Leonard, 19; Tennessee, 15; Charles, 13; & Martha, 8.

on June 1, 1880,
William & Nancy, ages 65 & 60, were still on Castlewood farm. Their sons, Wilson and Leonard, ages 38 and 28, were living nearby. Children still at home were Charlie B. & Mattie J., ages 21 & 17. They had two Mulatto servants, Winfield & Henry Collins, ages 16 & ll.

The date Nancy died is unknown. William died on May 19, 1889. Both are buried on their farm, presently (2015) known as the Selfe-Holbrook Cemetery, which is well maintained by Self/Selfe descendants.

Will of William B. Self
I William B. Self of Russell County State of Virginia: Doth swear and publish this my will and Testament.

1st I give and bequeath to my son Wilson V. Self all the lands I own lying South and West of the public road leading from the Herald Valley to the Gravelly Lick road. And my said son Wilson shall pay to my five daughters to wit. Malissa Kiser, Aley Dickenson, Betty Begley, Tennisee Counts, and Martha Gillinwaters, as soon as he can do so after my death one hundred dollars.

2nd I have already aided my son Lenard B Self in paying for his land where he now lives.

3rdly I give and bequeath to my son Charles B. Self all the lands I own North and east of said public road from Heralds Valley to Gravelly Lick road. My said Charles shall pay as soon as he can after my death four hundred dollars to my five daughters aforesaid.

4th Any personal property that I may have on lands at my death shall after paying funeral expenses be divided equally between my five daughters aforesaid.

5th I hereby constitute and appoint my son Charles B. Self Executor with bond of this my will and Testament.

At a County Court Continued and held for Russell County at the Court House thereof on Wednesday the 3rd day of July 1889. The last will and Testament of Wm. B. Self deceased was produced in Court and proven by the oaths of Wm J. Dickenson & C.C.J. Dickenson the two subscribing witnesses thereto who testified that they witnessed said will at the request of said Wm B. Self and in this presence, and in the presence of each other. And thereupon ordered to be recorded.
