Mathew and his brother Benjamin (#86732926) immigrated to the US in 1873 on board the passenger ship Main. On 15 Jul 1880 he married Maria Von Bokern and they had six children: Katie, Mary, Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Matthew and Joseph. Mathew was a cabinetmaker while he lived in Louisville. Maria died in 1894 following childbirth with their son Joseph and he subsequently moved to Rockport, Indiana. Shortly thereafter he married Christina A. Daming. The couple had no children of their own but they did adopt two daughters, Dorothy and May. After he moved to Indiana he was a noted cattle farmer for the rest of his life. Mathew died of arteriosclerosis and senility at the age of 82.
