Mary was born in the small town of Ankum, Hannover. She was the youngest of six children born to Johann Friederich Von Bokern and his second wife Maria Katharina Wessendorf. In 1875, along with her sister Sophia and Sophia's future husband John Taphorn, she immigrated to the US on board the passenger ship Ohio.
They settled in Louisville, Kentucky. On 15 Jul 1880 she married Matthew Vogelsang and they had six children: Katie, Mary, Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Matthew and Joseph. She died of septacemia, apparently as a result of complications arising from the birth of Joseph. Mary was 36.
