John Calvin Laird was the son of John Laird and Jean/Jane Edmondson, (buried at Falling Spring Cemetery). He married Mary Susan McKee, daughter of John T. McKee, on 30 Sep 1835, in Rockbridge Co., VA, James Paine, Presbyterian, officiating. He was born 4 Jun 1814.

They had 9 children: John H., Charles E., Samuel McKee, Henry Ruffner, Agnes J., Alexander F., Mary E., James M. and William R. between 1836 and 1855. Detail on wife Mary's connected site.

On the 1850 District 51, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer John C Laird, 36; Mary S Laird, 35; John H Laird, 14; Samuel Laird, 10; Henry R Laird, 8; Agnefs J Laird, 6; Alexander F Laird, 4; Mary E Laird, 4/12; Sarah Entsminger, 20 and farmer John T McKee, 67; all VA born (John T McKee is his father in law).

In 1864 at age 49, he served in the CSA in the Rockbridge County Reserves, Montague's Battalion. Confederate Soldiers Who Served from VA.

I suspect this is the J.C. Laird mentioned below involving McKee land: Jas W McClungs' WPA of VA Historical Inventory #ROC419, says The Old Home of John C. Laird, photo from 1937. Home was "built by John McKee in 1820" (son maybe), later owned by J.C. Laird. The original land owner of Borden grant was John McKee. Home passed to John McKee's son William McKee. A list of the owners through 1937 is given in #4. A 2 story log building. #6 mentions the Indian attacks and fortification in the basement for protection from the Indians. The now modernized 2 story home is located where the 10 Oct 1764 Indian Massacre took place. Located 7 miles west of Lexington on Rt. #60. At the Library of VA online, includes copyrighted photo of home in about 1936.

Mary S McKee's husband John C Laird, "was by occupation, a tanner, a devout Christian gentleman, a ruling elder in Monmouth Church for about twenty-six years, and died January 20, 1866." Per: The McKees of Virginia and Kentucky, by George Wilson McKee, University of Chicago, J B Richards, 1891, page129

Note: John and wife Mary are NOT buried at McKee Cemetery, AKA Big Spring, in Kerrs Creek, just around the corner. It was added in ERROR to the book, Rockbridge County, Virginia Cemeteries, Vol. 1, Kerrs Creek District, by Angela Ruley. It was based on the survey by Miss (not Mrs.) "Margaret S Seebert and Bob Driver, listings provided by Rev. Wray Sherman of New Monmouth." There are other incorrect entries on this survey that are here and not at McKee Cemetery.
