On the 1850 Rockbridge Co., VA Census, I found farmer John C. Laird, 36; Mary S. Laird, 35; Attending school were kids: John H. Laird, 14; Samuel Laird, 10; Henry R. Laird, 8; Agness I. Laird, 6; At home: Alexander F. Laird, 4; infant Mary E. Laird, 4/12, and (her father) farmer John T. McKee, age 67, all VA born.
Her husband John is buried here, too. The Rockbridge Co., VA Death Register says she died of Typhoid fever, the daughter of Jno "F" & Nancy H McKee, born in Rockbridge and wife of J.C. Laird, who reported it.
"BY CAPT. JOHN PRESTON MOORE, CLERK OF ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY COURT. “Mary S. McKee married John C. Laird and resided at the old McKee homestead, on Kerr's Creek, in Rockbridge (County, Va., until her death, November 27 (sic), 1858. Her husband was by occupation, a tanner, a devout Christian gentleman, a ruling elder in Monmouth Church for about twenty-six years, and died January 20, 1866. She had nine children:
1) John Harvey married Frances Schooler, of Atcheson County, Mo. They had four children. (Okie W., David F., Mary E. and J. W. Okie W. died in about 1883. The others are married and reside in Atcheson (sic) County, Mo.
2) Charles Edward Laird died while an infant, August 30, 1839.
3) Samuel McKee Laird was killed in battle at Hawe's Shop, May 28, 1864; was a member of Company C, First Virginia Cavalry (Confederate), and unmarried.
4) Henry Ruffner Laird is a Presbyterian minister; was educated at Washington College; was a member of Liberty Hall Volunteers: married Sarah H. McCluer; had five children, to-wit.: Mary McC, John H., Lilla P., Henry R. and Arthur M. Mary McC. died June 2,1872; the others reside with their parents at Tinkling Spring Church, Augusta County, Va., of which their father is pastor.
5) Agnes Jane Laird married J. P. Moore, and resides near Lexington, Va. She had five children: John W. Frank, Mary E., an infant, who died in infancy, and Martha L.
6) Alexander F. Laird is a Presbyterian minister, and the pastor of Mt. Horeb Church, Augusta County, Va. He married Lilla K. McCeer (sic); had three children, Kate, who died in infancy. John C. and Mary L.
7) Mary E. Laird married Samuel R. Moore, and lived and died (January 13, 1883) at the old McKee homestead on Kerr's ('reek. Her husband is now Treasurer of Rockbridge County, Va. She had four children. Edward L., Mary A., Harry P. and Elizabeth W. Mary A. died April 11, 1889, and Elizabeth W. died in January, 1883.
8) James M. Laird is a physician, practicing at Coal Valley, West Virginia; he is unmarried.
9) William R. Laird is a Presbyterian minister: married Mary Ella Penick : has three children, Daniel A. P., James M. and __?_ _?__.
