Mom graduated from Tropic High School. After graduating she worked at the canning factory in Spanish Fork. Returning to Tropic, Mom started working at Ruby's Inn about 1937. She cleaned rooms, waited tables, and filled in where needed, including tending Carl and Thelma Syrett's children.
After Carl's first wife Thelma died of pneumonia, leaving him with four small children, Carl and Jean were married November 19, 1940 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they reared Carl's four children, and the six children born to them. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She helped raise Doug's sons, Bret and Eric when they came to live with their father.
The family lived at Ruby's Inn from the day school was out for summer until Thanksgiving. During the fall, she would drive the children back and forth to Panguitch each day for school until the children were old enough to drive.
Mom always opened her home in Panguitch to extended family. Many relatives stayed in our home whenever they needed to be close to family in the hospital and while they were recuperating during and after medical treatment.
Mom worked along side of Carl managing Ruby's Inn, cooking, cleaning, waiting tables, and working in the post office. During Mom's years at the inn she developed many cherished friendships over the years with employees and guests.
Mom was active in the LDS church and held many positions. She and Carl were avid temple workers and served as temple coordinators for the Panguitch North Ward. She served as a visiting teacher, and in the Escalante Stake Young Women Organization.
To honor her, Ruby's Inn was incorporated into Bryce Canyon City on her 90th birthday in 2007. The certificate was signed on her birthday by then Lt. Governor Gary Herbert.
When Carl retired they traveled extensively, together with his sister Armeda and her husband LeGrande, friends Tom and Lucille Barlow, and other friends. Some of Moms favorite trips were going to Alaska with Dad and Doug in the motor home, and traveling to Florida with Jim and Helma Excell to bring Rod home when he competed his mission.
They moved to St. George making it their second home until Dad passed away September 27, 1993. Mom then moved back to her hometown of Tropic.
Mom had a strong testimony of the Gospel and loved to read her scriptures. She sat at her desk and read her scriptures daily until she was unable to do so.
Mom, like her mother, always offered to feed anyone that came to see her. She was a good cook, and always had plenty for extras at the table. The children were always welcome to bring their friends to dinner with no warning.
Mom is survived by: children, Arthur (Vicki), MonDell (Florence), Roderick (Kathern), Frederick (Tonya), Shauna (Blaine) Anderson, Karleen (Dean) McInelly; daughter-in-law, Beverly Marshall; 80+ grandchildren, 145+ great-grandchildren, 15+ great-great-grandchildren.
