Escalante, UT
Our beautiful, loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Mary Bybee Shumway, 82, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2017 in Richfield. Mary, along with her twin brother, Mark, was born July 6, 1934 in Tropic to Levi Marion and Ella Riding Bybee. She was the 13th child of 14 children, which included two sets of twins.
She married Paul Steed, June 15, 1955 in the St. George Temple. He preceded her in death June 16, 1973. She married Dr. Ivan Westly Kazan, January 2, 1975 in Sparks, NV. He preceded her in death March 25, 1975. She married Daryl Richard Shumway, January 2, 1999 in Escalante by her son, Bishop Sam Steed. He preceded her in death June 10, 2006.
Mary was born and raised in Tropic. She graduated from Tropic HS in 1952. She was an amazing mom, raising six boys mostly on her own. Those boys went through a lot of babysitters! Mary loved her grandchildren dearly. They called her TuTu, which is "grandma" in Hawaiian. She was a staunch republican.
Mary enjoyed looking for arrowheads on the Escalante desert. She painted ceramics and was well known for her green chili omelets and burrows.
Mary was a hard worker. After Paul passed away she owned Skyline Lumber. It was during this time she was recognized by the Small Business Administration as the Small Business Person of the year in 1977. It was the first time a woman was recognized for this award in Utah. She owned the Frosty Shop in the ‘80's for about 15 years. She worked many years for The Bryce Canyon Lodge, working in management for the last 12 years before her retirement. She was a member of the Lion’s Club.
A faithful member of the LDS Church, Mary was an ordinance worker in the St. George Temple. She enjoyed many other callings in the Church, especially compassionate service.
