Joseph A. Degenhardt was born May 5, 1903 in Elkville to August and Ida Heitman Degenhardt. His surviving siblings included William of Ava, and Mildred Miller and Dena Collins of Du Quoin.

He married Stella Craig in 1927 in Benton. She survived as well as children, Gleenwood of Percy and Esther Deppe of Percy.

Mr. Degenhardt was a member of the Baptist Church in Percy. He was a retired coal miner.

He died at the age of 71 on Tuesday, June 11, 1974 in Memorial Hospital in Chester after a long illness. His funeral was held at Schaack Funeral Home in Steeleville. Rev. Owen Hamilton officiated.
