William J. Degenhardt was born September 25, 1906 in Jackson County to August and Ida Heitman Degenhardt. He left two sisters -- Dena Collins and Mildred Miller, both of Du Quoin. One brother preceded him in death.

He married Jewel M. Martin on December 31, 1929 in Murphysboro. His children included Donald L. and Gary R., both of Ava. He was preceded in death by a son.

Mr. Degenhardt was a shovel operator at the Southwestern Coal Co. mine in Percy, and a member of the UMWA Local 7333. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Mr. Degenhardt died at the age of 69 on Tuesday, July 20, 1976 at Memorial Hospital in Chester after an illness of 10 months. His funeral service was held at Wilson Funeral Home in Ava.
