Letha Margret (Austin) HOLMQUIST, 93, of Holyoke was born in Sedgwick County on February 1, 1907 to Frank Nelson Austin and Rebecca Elizabeth Ann (Heller) Austin. Letha passed away at Prairie Vista Care Center in Holyoke on Sunday, September 24, 2000.
Letha grew up northwest of Holyoke with eight sisters and three brothers.
Letha was united in marriage to Vernon HOLMQUIST on August 28, 1928. To this union a daughter, Adeline, was born. They spent several years farming in the areas around Fairfield and Byers. They also spent time working at the Bethany Old Folks Home in Spokane, Washington.
For eight years the family lived in the Denver area where they attended the First Covenant Church. In 1980, Letha and Vernon retired from farming near Byers and bought a home in Holyoke to be closer to their daughter Adeline and her family.
Letha and Vernon traveled extensively in the United States and also enjoyed taking several cruises. They enjoyed being with their family and friends and they were involved in many activities over the years.
Letha was active in the Fairfield Covenant Church of Haxtun as well as the First Covenant Church in Denver. She was also a member of the Sorosis Club of Holyoke, the Friends Club of Haxtun, AARP and a member of the Hoyt Community Club at Byers.
Letha is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Rebecca Austin; husband Vernon Holmquist; brothers and sisters, Maple, Leo, Katie, Vera, Lila, Ethel, Alice and Frank and an infant sister; and one grandson, Ronnie Coyne.
Letha HOLMQUIST is survived by her daughter, Adeline Coyne and husband Jim of Holyoke; five grandchildren, Allen Coyne and wife Janet of Julesburg, Rochelle Coyne of Holyoke, Barry Coyne and wife Jerilyn of Holyoke, Tricia Coyne and husband Mike of Holyoke and Jolene McCallum and husband David of Holyoke; granddaughter-in-law, Patty Coyne of Holyoke; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Minnie Lundstrom of Holyoke; and one brother, Burl Austin of Julesburg.
Funeral services for Letha HOLMQUIST were held at Thursday, September 28 at the Fairfield Covenant Church with Pastor Loyd Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the Holyoke Memorial
