First of all, this man's family name is really Obenland. For some reason, he started using Oberland instead.

According to his Social Security Application in 1936, August's parents were August and Mary (Marie) Klein Obenland. August's middle name might have been Friederich. Both of his parents were born in Germany. August Alexander was born on May 2, 1889. He was one of four children born to the couple. His brothers were Charles, born in 1880 and John Carl, born in 1887. He had one sister, Julia, born in 1885. All of the children were born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In 1900, August lived with his widowed mother, Mary, and his siblings in Camden, New Jersey. By 1910, August was living with his mother and stepfather at 1425 Haddon Ave. in Camden. His brothers Charles and John were still livng at home as well. August was a machinist, working in a machine shop in town.

Sometime between 1910 and 1915, August married a young lady named Mary Ann Campbell. They were married in the Catholic Church in Camden, New Jersey. The couple had two children, August Alexander, Jr. and Helen Marie.

When August registered for the draft for WWI, he and his wife and two children were living in a home they owned at 1193 Jackson St. in Camden. He was a machinist foreman at Langston Machine Company, also known as Samuel Langston, Co. On his registration, August is described as being of medium height and weight, with brown eyes and dark brown hair.

In 1930, the family was living on White Horse Pike, in Camden. The home they owned was worth $9,000 at the time.
August was still working at the Langston Company as a machinist.

August and Mary Ann later divorced, the exact year unknown. The divorce took place in Laurel Springs, New Jersey. August then married Margaret I. Zepper, a young lady 23 years his junior.

I was told by a descendant of August's brother, John, that August was estranged from the rest of his family. Whether this is true and if so, the reason for the estrangement, is unknown at this time.

According to the Social Security Death Index, August passed away in October, 1955.
