It is unclear whether he married for the first time in Germany or here in the United States. He and his first wife, Rose Marie Klein had 5 children: Charles, Julia, John Carl, Elizabeth Maria, and August Alexander Sr. Unfortunately, Elizabeth passed away as an infant.
It looks as if August and his wife divorced. I found an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer that said August was convicted of assaulting his wife in 1893. This might be a reason for the divorce. Both of them remarried. August married again in about 1904. His new wife was also named Mary. I have yet to find her maiden name. Census records state that she was born in California and both of her parents were born in Delaware.
August was a baker in Philadelphia. Two of his brothers, Johann Karl (Charles) and Gottlieb Friederich also came to the U.S and were bakers in Philadelphia.
August passed away in April, 1921. He was buried on May 2, 1921 in Greenmount Cemetery with his baby daughter, Lizzie Mary.
