Asaph was born about 1789 (1850 census gives his age as 61 and born in Connecticut), but his parentage has not been proven. Circumstantial evidence and DNA matches lead to Henry and Eunice (Alling) Spencer of New Hartford, Connecticut. Eunice's mother was an Atwater, and one of Asaph's sons was named Allen Atwater. Also, "The Four Spencer Brothers: their ancestors and descendants," Donald Lines Jacobus, "The American Genealogist" (1951) shows an Asaph in the Henry and Eunice Spencer family with the notation, "res. Grand Rapids, Mich." It is possible that family remaining in Connecticut confused Grand Rapids with Three Rivers.

Asaph settled at Wolcott, Seneca (now Wayne) County, New York where he married Mary Woodruff, daughter of Lambert and Mary (Nettleton) Woodruff. Children were: Henry Nettleton and Mariah. It is possible that Asaph traveled to New York with his sister Belinda's father-in-law Noah Seymour who settled in the area around the same time.

After Mary's death in 1820, he married Betsy Roberts. Their children were: George, Lydia Jane, Allen Atwater, and Franklin. The family relocated to Lockport Township, St. Joseph County about 1837. After Asaph's death, Betsy and her sons George and Franklin removed to Black Hawk County, Iowa.
