Betsy was born about 1793-1796. Her parentage is unknown but strong circumstantial evidence leads to David and Lydia (Lawrence) Roberts. She became the second wife of Asaph Spencer about 1821 in Seneca (now Wayne) County, New York. Children were: George, Lydia Jane, Allen Atwater, Franklin, and Arthur (died in infancy). The family relocated to the Three Rivers, Michigan area. After Asaph's death in 1851 Betsy moved with her sons to Black Hawk County, Iowa.
