Sharecropper with 2nd grade education in Madison Co., TX who moved his family and his jersy cow "Bessie" to Bryan, TX. He rented a shotgun house with 3 rooms on W.18th Street. It had no electricity. Coal oil lamps was used for lighting. A Number 2 wash tub was used for bathing and washing clothes. It had an outdoor toilet that used a Sears & Roebuck catalog for toilet paper. His first vehicle was a 1941 Chevolet with a cracked engine block. He never made over $1.00 per hour when he could find work but managed to keep his family fed.
