During the Civil War, her husband, along with four of her sons, enlisted in the Union Army to fight “The War of the Rebelion”, as it was known in the North. Rachel lost two of her sons during the war, and her husband, while serving in the 37th Iowa “Graybeard” Regiment, was disabled. In April, 1865, he returned to Rachel in Iowa. By 1870, they had moved to Tipton, in Cedar County, where they lived through 1880. They then moved to Rock Rapids, Iowa. While living there, in 1884, Lorenzo wrote and published “The Records of the Sweet Family”. In 1885 Lorenzo retired, but they then spent two years in McCook County, Dakota Territory, where Lorenzo was a preacher. In 1887, the couple moved to Pipestone County, Minnesota to live with their son William. Lorenzo and Rachel spent the rest of their years living on William’s farm in Troy Township. Lorenzo died in 1892. Rachel lived four more years and died on February 1, 1896. Lorenzo and Rachel are buried in the Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Troy Township. The cemetery has been searched, but no stone has been found for Rachel.
