During the Civil War, Lorenzo, along with four of his sons, enlisted in various Iowa units of the Union Army to fight “The War of the Rebelion”, as he called it. Two of their sons died during the war, and Lorenzo, while serving in the 37th Iowa “Graybeard” Regiment, Co. I, was disabled, being caught between some freight cars he was guarding and a building at Memphis on August 15, 1864. He was discharged in April, 1865 and returned home to Rachel. By 1870, they had moved to Tipton, in Cedar County, Iowa. There, Lorenzo studied law, was admitted to the bar, and practiced for several years. Lorenzo served in Tipton as assessor, justice of the peace and trustee. They then moved to Rock Rapids, in Lyon County, Iowa, where Lorenzo was postmaster. While living there, he wrote and published “The Records of the Sweet Family”.
In 1885 Lorenzo retired, but then spent two years preaching in McCook County, Dakota Territory. In 1887, the couple moved to Pipestone County, Minnesota to live with their son William on his farm. Lorenzo and Rachel spent the rest of their years living on William’s farm in Troy Township. Lorenzo died on January 7, 1892, Rachel lived four more years and died on February 1, 1896. Lorenzo and Rachel are buried in the Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Troy Township, Pipestone County.
