Henry Le Roi Sweet was born in Clinton, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, on December 10, 1840. He came to Wisconsin with his parents and then to Iowa in 1860. He enlisted in the 11th Iowa, and died at Camp Hospital near Pittsburgh Landing on May 4, 1862, a week after the battle. According to his father, he died of fever, a victim of malpractice; being ordered on duty by the brutal Surgeon when so weak as to be unable to carry a knapsack. He is buried in an unmarked grave at the Shiloh National Military Park in Hardin County, Tennessee.
