OBITUARY, The Correctionville News, 28 May 1950: Mary E. Worthan was born to Marion and Margaret Blue Coon at Spring Green, Wisconsin, on March 16, 1868, and passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City on May 19, 1959, at the age of 91, after a long illness. She was the last member of her family of seven. She was married to Stephen D. Worthan December 5, 1885, at Danbury. Seven children were born to this union, all of whom survive their mother's passing. She also helped to raise two granddaughters, Mrs. Ray (Mary Jane) Miller of Correctionville and Mrs. James (Doris) Spychalski of Chicago. They farmed near Correctionville several years before moving to Cedar Rapids where they resided about fifteen years. They returned to the Correctionville-Anthon community and farmed until moving to Minnesota in 1915. Mr. Worthan passed away at Mankato, Minnesota, October 2, 1923. Except for brief periods of residence in Chicago and Montana, she spent the remaining years in Correctionville and Anthon. For the past five years she has been cared for by her daughters, Mrs. Nona Smith and Mrs. Earl Shever in Mrs. Shever's home at Anthon. She has been a longtime member of the Methodist church and a member of the First Methodist Church in Correctionville since 1929. She was very active in the church and its organizations as long as health permitted. Survivors are her three daughters, Mrs. W.H. (Nona) Smith of Correctionville, Mrs. Earl (Myrtle) Shever of Anthon, Mrs. Francis (Ada) Launsbach of Walla Walla, Washington, and sons, Ray of Bronson, Samuel of Edwards, Missouri, and Carl and Perry of Chicago, twenty grandchildren, thirty-two great grandchildren, nine great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held May 22 at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Correctionville with Rev. C.Q. Wallace officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery at Anthon under direction of Wilson-Hull Funeral Home.
