John Russell Slaton, 91, of 205 East Robert Toombs Avenue, Washington, died May 1, 2005 following a brief illness.

Mr. Slaton was the son of the late John Thomas and Martha Ann (Annie) Dye Slaton and was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Willie Belle Johnson. He is survived by a daughter, Betty Ann Slaton of Washington and a son, T. Marion Slaton of Atlanta.

Mr. Slaton's early career was in construction management. He later served as District Supervisor of the Georgia Department of State Parks until retirement. He was born on ancestral land near Danburg in Wilkes County. Mr. Slaton was a descendant of several early settlers of Wilkes County, including Barnard Heard, who was the first Judge of Probate of original Wilkes. He pursued a lifelong interest in family and local history which led to his compiling and publishing VANISHING SITES OF OLD WILKES and enabled him to assist many others in locating their ancestral home sites and cemeteries. He helped to locate the site of the first Methodist conference held in Georgia in 1788 and the homesite of the John Marks, the stepfather of Meriweather Lewis who lived in Georgia for several years during his youth.

Mr. Slaton was a member of the Washington Presbyterian Church where he had served as an Elder. He was a charter member of the Samuel Elbert Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Washington-Wilkes Historical Foundation, the Augusta Genealogical Society and the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.

A service will be held on Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at noon in Resthaven Cemetery, Washington, with Dr. Harold Lawrence and the Rev. Dr. John A. Via officiating. The family will receive friends Monday evening, 6 to 8 p.m. at Hopkins Funeral Home.
