Joe was born to Nichlaus and Barbara Dumpert Becker in Nebraska. He was eleven when the family moved to Muenster and at the age of thirteen became the man of the family when his father died. He and his brothers and sisters helped his mother keep their farm and purchase another one. They became a very prosperous family.
