Dr. Caleb Burwell Rowan Kennerly was born 2 Mar 1830 at "Greenway Court" in White Post, Frederick County, Virginia. He was the youngest son of Rev. Thomas Kennerly and Ann Susan Carnegy.

Caleb graduated from Dickinson College in 1849 with a B.A. degree and received his doctorate in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1852.

Caleb was employed as a surgeon-naturalist with the Pacific Railroad Survey 1853-1855. He also participated in the U. S. Mexico Boundary Survey 1855 - 1857, and the Northwestern Boundary Survey 1857 - 1861. During this time, he kept a correspondence with Spencer Baird of the Smithsonian, who later credited Kennerly for the discovery of over one hundred specimens.

During the Northwest Boundary Survey, Caleb married Cecelia Chanique in a tribal ceremony. He fathered one child with her.

While returning to Virginia from the Northwest Boundary Survey, Caleb died at sea off the coast of California 6 Feb 1861 and was buried in the Pacific Ocean. He is memorialized on his brother Joseph McKendree Kennerly's gravestone at Greenway Court Cemetery.
