Ruby was born at home on the west side of North Salem Avenue (#110, across from her brother, R. T.) in Sumter, S. C. There was a change of address as her father bought a farm in Barnwell (Meyers Mill); Ruby grew up there. So, when Ruby reached school age, she lived in town in Sumter with older sister, Lola, and her husband Ben Cantey on South Salem Ave. so as to have better schooling (Ben & Lola subsequently moved to Haynsworth St.). The story is that Ruby went to the local drug store, bought a drivers license for 50 cents, and drove a school bus. Her mother died when Ruby was 22, and Ruby married Wash Patrick when she was 23.

The extended family group photo: it is from a retouched (her son, Reid, had this done in 2017) original posted by me on memorial of husband, "Wash":

Photo taken Christmas 1934-37 after snowfall (at #115 North Salem Ave. [back yard], Sumter, S. C.). Identification help has come from first cousins once removed, W. Reid Patrick, Jr. & "Dot" Matthews Morgan; and from my Uncle Murr Hall Brown; and from my first cousin, Emily Cain Shuman (Betty Brown's daughter); and from 2nd cousin, Zoe Rhame Warmoth (Dr. "Jack" Rhame's daughter). From viewer's left to right:

(1) front row: little girl ("Betty Zoe" Elizabeth Missoura Rhame ?) holding doll; taller girl is Jane Brown (or a Rhame ?) holding doll; teenage girl is definitely Betty Brown (confirmed by daughter, Emily Cain Shuman); little boy with cowboy hat is W. R Patrick, Sr., & Ruby's son, W. Reid Patrick, Jr. (age 2 & 1/2 if pic is truly Dec. 1934 & 5 & 1/2 if 1937).

(2) back row: young teen (a Rhame ?...) boy; man with hat & pipe is George Ashby Rhame, Jr.; man without hat is "Jack" John Murr Rhame...see "Jack" as a Citadel Cadet on his memorial; Ruby Irene Brown Patrick (wearing glasses) & then her husband of 5 and a half years, "Wash" Washington Reid Patrick, Sr.; (?) light-haired man to left & slightly behind "Wash" may be 11 y/o "Joe" Joseph Burns Rhame or 16 y/o "B. O." Cantey, III; dark-haired man is "Ben" Benjamin Oliver Cantey, Jr.; lady with fur shawl is Lola Brown Cantey; (boys) Murr Hall Brown and "Tom" Thomas Edward Brown (confirmed by Murr).

See many Brown extended-family photo links on the memorial of Ruby's neice, HERE (and Mildred's the memorial for Mildred's father...Ruby's brother); and Mildred's husband's Shaw extended-family HERE.

Ruby & Wash lived most of their lives at 110 Beaufain Street, at the head of Colonial Lake, in Charleston, S. C. She had red hair and was a stately lady and gracious to all. She was a long-time volunteer at the reception desk of Roper Hospital. They had one son, W. Reid Patrick, Jr. and one grandchild, W. Reid Patrick, III.

When she was 90 years old, I asked about her father's side of the family. She told me that all she'd ever heard talked about was her mother's Kolb Family. She did not ever remember her father ever talking about his parents.
