Son of Captain Moses CHAPLINE, Sr and Jennett CATON. Married: Mary CALDWELL on 31 Aug 1775 or 1775, in Virginia. USA.

Was clerk of all courts of Frederick County, MD; one of earliest citizens of Wheeling, WV, one of 14 listed as the original settlers in"History of Wheeling City & Ohio Co, WV" published 1902; served with high credit in Rev. War, received public thanks of Gen. Washington for bravery, and fought along with Col. Eb. Zane against the French and Indians. Was clerkof Ohio County in Oct 1789 (History of Wheeling and Ohio County, p20

). He issued the marriage licence of Sarah Zane and John McIngtur(McIntyre) 11 Jan 1790. Per WFT # 5938. From the "Wheeling Repository", March 26, 1807: On Wednesday, March 18th the Common Council elected Moses Chapline Mayor.

"Only ten miles northeast of Wheeling a new town was laid out by Moses Chapline, Zachariah Spriggs, George McCulloch, Charles Wells, Andrew Van Swearingen, James Mitchell and Benjamin Briggs and was named West Liberty. P 487, "That Dark andBloody River" by Allan W. Eckert

MOSES CATON CHAPLINE, b.20th Oct. 1754; d. 10th Feb. 1812; was clerk of all the courts of Frederick Co., Md. One of the earliest citizens of Wheeling, W. Va. Served with high credit in the Revolutionary War, and received public thanks of Gen. Washington for his bravery in one of the severest affairs of the war. Was present at andparticipated in battles of Long Island, Brooklyn Heights, White Plains, storming of Fort Washington, Trenton and Princeton. Wounded at the Battle of Cowpens. First Lieutenant Md. Battalion of the Flying Camp, June to [p.177] December, 1776.

First Lieutenant 6th Maryland, 10th Dec. 1776; Captain 20th Feb. 1777. He was sent out after Braddock's defeat to Ohio Co. VA, to guard the frontiers against the French and Indians; on this expedition was accompanied byCol. Ebenezer ZANE, Col. John CALDWELL, Major John GOOD, Col. CRESAP, and Col. Lawrence WASHINGTON. He is buried in the Stone Church cemetery, Wheelin
