"In Memoriam" for Warren Peter Irwin.
Warren Peter Irwin, the subject of this brief sketch was born in the town of Warwarsing, Ulster county, NY on the 22nd of February ---[looks like 1863]....his family moved to Elk County in 1872 and for the past 18 years have been residing in Ridgway....Warren was a studious, thoughtful boy and always stood well in his class, while a pupil in the graded school of Ridgway ... about two years ago he entered the machine shop of J. H. McEwen as an apprentice ... after completing his term as an apprentice he worked in the Ridgway Iron Works until his first severe illness in December, 1890 ... then he was stricken down while on his way to the shops and nearly died from suffocation or closing of his windpipe.... Warren Irwin was a member of the Elk Hose company and in the fire at the Thayer House in February 1890, rendered most efficient service ... his clothing was thoroughly wet and he went home to exchange his clothes ... his mother tried to persuade him to remain in the house for the balance of the day but he reasoning that he was needed at the shop, went to his work again ... from that day forward the disease made sure and rapid progress, and yet so flattering was it that himself, his physician nor his nearest friends did not suspect the nature of the malady that was bringing him to his grave ... in August, 1890 Warren lost his voice but continued to work until December, when he was attacked so suddenly as before stated..in January, 1891, in company with Dr. Williams he went to Philadelphia to consult with a noted surgeon and specialist in throat disease.... (had an operation to his windpipe) .....long stay in hospital....had to go back.....came home again in May, then seemed to rapidly decline and in June his sister, Flora, brought him home.....since his return he was frequently seen riding in company with his father........on Thursday last it was apparent that he was sinking and on Friday morning at about 5 o'clock he breathed his last.....funeral was from Methodist church.
