IRWIN.--Peter R. Irwin, a long time resident of Eagle Valley, died at his home on Water Street, Saturday last, shortly before 2 o'clock of gangrene, aged 64 years, 8 months, and 14 days. The fatal disease first fastened upon him last spring and was the result of a severe attack of la grippe, combined probably with a frozen foot, which finally settled in that member. Three weeks before his death it was found necessary to perform an amputation of one of the toes on his left foot. The operation was performed by Dr. W. L. Williams. From that time he became bedridden and from day to day his physical strength relaxed until death ended his sufferings. The funeral was held at the Congregational Church by Rev. J. S. Upton, assisted by Rev. A. C. Bowers, of the Centre street Methodist Episcopal Church. Interment was made in Pine Grove Cemetery. Shortly before the services at the church, prayer was offered at the home of the deceased. Mrs. Irwin was confined at home at this time with typhoid fever. The pall bearers were: C. E. Holiday, Dubois Gorton, H. K. Gregory, Morris Sherman, John Swanson and David Van Aken. Deceased was born at Lackawack, Ulster Co., New York in 1831, and twenty-four years ago removed to Elk County. He had continuously been employed by W. H. Osterhout, later by the Elk Tanning Company, since his first habitation in Ridgway. The past twelve years his services have been retained in the capacity of "barn boss" at the Eagle Valley Tannery. His living children are: John H., Ridgway; Mrs. J. K. Ellithrope, Carlo; Mrs. Frank Lenig, St. Louis; Daniel C. Irwin, Ellicottville; Mrs. T. J. Bogle, Ridgway; Mrs. J. K. Lewis, Ridgway; Miss Ermina, who resides at home, all of whom were present at the obsequies. All the children were at the death bed with the exception of Mrs. Lenig, of St. Louis, who reached Ridgway shortly after the sad occurrence.
