Copy of undated Obituary:
MILBURN
Joseph E. Milburn was born in Alabama, October 4, 1829, and died July 16, 1915, aged 85 years, 9 months, and 12 days. Converted in his youth and licensed to preach at the age of 32 years as a Missionary Baptist. He continued active until about 15 years ago. He moved to this country about 15 years ago and settled the place on which he died.
Throughout his life he was a consistent christian, and preached the gospel about 38 years. Many times when in his prime he would pray for a peaceful hour in which to die. Though during his last illness he suffered excruciating pain, yet his prayers were answered, for the last few hours were marked for their peaceful calm, and his spirit drifted out of this world as peacefully and lightly as "moonlight falls on midnight water." He was conscious almost to the last, and for days prayed to die, but would always say "Lord thy will, not mine be done." In his prayers one time he was heard to say "Oh my dear mother"--"Oh Lord throw out your lights from heaven," and in a few more hours exclaimed, "Oh, I see the lights." Later he said he was "standing at the pearly gates waiting for Jesus to beckon." He was willing and anxious to go, having the assurance that all was well. He lived a quiet, honorable life, daily in touch with the Supreme Arbiter of our destinies, and died as he lived, filled with all the christian graces and the faith that "overcometh all things." Simply he lived and simply he died, and simply and plainly he requested to be laid away. That the grave has no victory and death no sting, was proven to all his dear friends and relatives who stood beside him in his last hours. Death crept upon him and crowned him like a benediction, and his spirit went back to the God who gave it. -- A Friend
