Friend of Governor, Dies
In Sayre

SAYRE, Jan. 15.- Funeral rites for J. G. Milburn, 90, were read at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at the Church of Christ by Rev. J. C. Carman ‚of(sic) Elk City.

Mr. Milburn passed away Thursday at the home of his son W. J. Milburn on North Broadway after a lingering illness of many weeks. He is survived by his wife, his son W. J. Milburn and daughter Mrs. M. L. Inman, both of Sayre, and other children.

Mr. and Mrs. Milburn came to Sayre from Britton where they had lived for many years, and for the past year made their home with their son and Mrs. Milburn. They were pioneers in the eastern section of Oklahoma where Mr. Milburn was a friend of Governor W. H. Murray in an early day. He was a Confederate veteran serving with the Confederate army during the period of the war between the states. He was a member of the Church of Christ and was a pastor in this denomination for many years before his health failed. Interment was made in the Sayre-Doxey cemetery.

Beside his wife and son here. Mr. Milburn is survived by two other sons land four. daughters; L. J. Milburn,
Oklahoma City; T. C. Milburn, Elk City; Mrs. M. L. Inman, Sayre; Mrs. B. F. Mansfield, Bowie, Texas; Mrs. W. O. Kelley, Clovis, N. M., and Mrs. J. E. Newman, Tishomingo.

Funeral services for Elder Joshua G. Milburn, father of W. J. Milburn and Mrs. M. L. Inman of this city, were held at the Church of Christ Friday at 2 o'clock with Rev. Carmen officiating.

He died here last week after a short illness.

Milburn was a Civil war soldier, planter and later a minister of the Church of Christ.

He was born April 3, 1842 in Sumpter county, Alabama.

His parents brought him to Starrvile, Texas in 1945. His father was a plantation owner and Baptist preacher until his death the second Year of the Civil war.

At the beginning of the Civil war Milburn entered the army at Dallas and served both in the infantry and cavalry. His services carried him into several states where he saw action under the leadership of General Price.

After the war he returned to Way-erly, Texas, where he married Mary E. Ellisor, who survives him.

In his later years he devoted a great deal of his time to religious work and to writing for religious papers.

Seven of his ten children survive him. They are: Mrs. B. F. Mans-field, Bowie, Texas; W. J. Milburn, Sayre; Mrs. Oliver Kelley, Clovis, New Mexico; Mrs. M. L. Inman, Sayre; Mrs. J. E. Newman, Tisha-mingo; T. C. Milburn, Elk City and L. J. Milburn, Oklahoma City. A total of 80 descendants mourn his loss.

Joshua Gracie "J.G." Milburn was the son of Williamson Milburn and Mary Ann Letticia Seale. He married 11 Sept 1866 Mary Ann Elizabeth Ellisor (also buried in this cemetery.)

He was in the Confederate Army, as were 2 of his brothers and his father. J.G. was my great-grandfather.
