Life of Walter Fort snuffed out under machine - passenger escapes

Victim leaves wife and three small children - accident occured near Dubben Farm

Walter Fort, aged twenty-five, of the town of Middlefield, was instantly killed Wednesday morning when the truck he was driving tipped over on its side and pinned him beneath the left rear wheel. Herbert Planenhorn, also of Middlefield, a passenger in the truck, was uninjured.

The accident happened near the George Dubben farm in the town of Middlefield on a gravel road project on which Fort was working at the time. The truck, owned by the town of Middlefield, and used on the project, was loaded with field stone at time time, which had been picked up on the Herschel Page farm for use on the improvement of the Middlefield-Pleasant Brook road.

In LOW GEAR

According to Plankenhorn, who was in the cab when it tipped over, the truck was proceeding along in second or third gear, having become caught in a rut. As Fort tried to turn out of the rut to the right, the truck went out of control. Fort yelled for Plankenhorn to jump and as he did, jumped himself and was caught beneath the wheel. Plankenhorn was able to cawl out the window of the ba after it had gone over on its side.

Sheriff Fred F. Fox, called to the scene, notified Coroner Harrie V. Frink of Richfield Springs, and after making an investigations, Dr. Frink ordered the body removed the the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown where an inquest will be held on Friday morning. The truck was considerably damaged.

Since 1935, Fort had been employed as a laborer and truck driver in Middlefield, June 16th, 1912, the son of Lester and Anna Fort of Middlefield. On July 28th, 1931 he married Miss Hellen Laymon of Portlandville. She survives, with the parents, and three small children, Joyce, aged five years, Jena, aged four years and Walter Jr. , aged three years. Another daughter, Doris died February 7th 1935. There are also two brothers, Guy and Lewis Fort, both of Middlefield.
