Funeral services were held at Pine Grove on Tuesday for Mrs. Jodie Smith, aged 78, wife of Bahlam Smith, who passed away at the family home at Blade at 12 o'clock Monday night.

Mrs. Smith had been a resident of this community throughout her entire lifetime. She was a member of the Baptist Church at Pine Grove.

Surviving the deceased are the following: her husband, four sons, John, Abbis [sic Abbie], and T. J. [Thomas J.] of Jena, and Oliver of Good Pine; three daughters, Mrs.
Turse [sic Turic] and Olllie and Eulboa [sic Eulola] Smith of Jena. Kinner and Stevens, local undertakers, had charge of the funeral services.

Jody was the daughter of William Anderson Edwards and Lauretta Edna Fortner. The 1900 Catahoula Census shows she was born in April of 1853, which conflicts with the date on the headstone. However, she is a three year old on the 1860 Catahoula Census.

Jody married Balem Smith in Catahoula Parish, LA, September 13, 1877.

Mother of Nine children (1900 Catahoula Parish Census):

1. Laura circa 1879. Appears on the 1880 census but is gone by the 1900. She may be buried in Pine Grove.

2. Nannie A.

3. Susan Ollie

4. John Everett

5. William Oliver

6. Thomas Jefferson

7. James Abbie

8. Eulola (Married Clarence Benjamin Peppers)

9. Unknown child between 1878 and 1900. On the 1900 Catahoula census, Jody claims she is the mother of nine children and only seven are still living.
