Joseph J. Carter, 89, of Palatka, FL, went to be with the Lord peacefully Sunday, January 25, 2009, at the Kindred Hospital in Green Cove Springs, FL.

A native of Blackshear, GA, he had been a resident of Palatka for the past 24 years coming from Hialeah following his retirement. He was a master machinist and specialized in gear manufacturing. He had worked for Sperry in New York City, NY, Baker-Hill Industries and Florida Gears and Systems in Miami, FL. He was a member of the St. James United Methodist Church and was a member of the Benevolent Protective Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge #1074 in Hialeah for over 50 years. He enjoyed his retirement and operating his horse ranch in Palatka. He also enjoyed fishing. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He carried a special love for his family and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert J. Carter; his parents, Silas and Delphia Carter and six brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Jo Ann Carter, Palatka; two sons and daughters-in-law, William S. and Elsie Carter, Lake City, FL and Joseph E. and Therese Carter, Interlachen; two daughters and a son-in-law, Irene Carter, Louisville, KY and Cheryl and Harold Marcho, Slidell, LA; a brother, Grady Carter, Palatka; a sister, Irene Dickinson, Sarasota, FL; five grandchildren, Charity Gall and Nicholas Carter, both of Lake City, Shelby Carter, Sheyenne Carter and Kindra Carter, all of Interlachen and a great-granddaughter, Erica Gall.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, from the Masters Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Chris White officiating.

Interment followed in the Palatka Memorial Gardens.
