Nelson Herrick is the 10th child and youngest son of Lemuel and Sarah Sally (Judd) Herrick. His family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1831 in Ohio. He married Harriet Helen Sprague. He was drug to death by a team of horses while hauling logs out of Ogden County.
