"Samuel Hoffert located on Laurel Run, Marion township, Hocking county, Ohio. He began housekeeping in a log house by his father's sawmill for one year, then moved one mile west on a farm given him by his father. He united with the German-Baptist, being baptized by the Rev. Isaac Beery. He was an eloquent speaker and was elected to the office of Deacon. In 1856, he sold his farm to his brother-in-law, Eli Freisner (son of David Freisner) and bought his brother Solomon's farm in Fairfield county, Ohio. The land joined his father's old homestead on the north. Samuel lived there until April 13, 1862. He traded with his brother Solomon for Solomon's 160 acre farm in Clinton county, Indiana, and he paid Solomon $1,850 for the difference. Samuel lived on the Clinton county farm until his death on April 1, 1900, at age 73 years, 9 months, and 18 days. His wife died October 2, 1886, aged 67 years, 5 months, and 24 days. Both are interred in Middlefork cemetery southwest of Rossville, Indiana."
