Eugene O. "Pa" Ashby

BUTTE, Mont. - Eugene O. "Pa" Ashby, 91, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, in the Copper Ridge Nursing Home.

He was born Aug. 23, 1917, in Cumberland to William and Saima Betty (Hill) Stemberg. Since his stepfather, Arthur Ashby, was a tramp miner, the family spent some early years in several states. Most of his childhood years were spent in Montana. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in Rock Creek, McKinley and Lincoln and grade schools in Butte and Philipsburg, Mont., where he graduated from the eighth grade. He graduated from Tintic High School in Eureka, Utah.He married Kathryn Behring of Rock Springs on Aug. 14, 1937, in Manila, Utah. They were married for 53 years. She preceded him in death on Aug. 14, 1990.

They lived in Wyoming, where Mr. Ashby was a coal miner in Stansbury, Rock Springs and Superior. In 1954, the family moved to Everett, Wash., where Mr. Ashby worked at Scott Paper Company until his retirement in 1979. In 1991, he returned to Butte to be near his remaining family.

His interests included fishing, boasting of fishing all the rivers, lakes and puddles throughout the Rocky Mountain states and Pacific Northwest; tying his own fishing flies, even inventing some for specific areas such as his ?greenies? for Georgetown Lake; astronomy, building his own telescope and grinding its lenses; and geology, collecting numerous specimens opals, sapphires, crystals and fossils, which he polished and mounted.He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Renee; grandsons, Steven and Jacqueline and their son Ryan of Butte, David and Angie and their sons Riley and Connor of Helena, Mont., and Mark Ashby in Windsor Locks, Conn.; granddaughter, Susanne ?Sue? Ashby of Butte; sister, Betty DuPape of Rock Springs; nieces and nephews, Shirley and Allen Green and family of Des Moines, Iowa, Barbara and Doug Brough and family of Rock Springs, Judy Kintner and family of Newport News, Va., Ken and Teena Bucho and Kenny of Rock Springs and Conrad Behring Jr. of Las Cruces, N.M.; sister-in-law, Nancy Homan and Bob of Cheyenne; brother-in-law, Fred Behring of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and special in-law ?family,? Helen Duval and Charlene and Leonard of the Cascade, Mont. ?ranch,? and Skip of Nampa, Idaho.He was preceded in death by his wife; mother; father; and stepfather.

Relatives and friends may call after 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, for visitation at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Butte. A liturgy of the resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday. Visitation will be conducted after 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at the Vase Funeral Home in Rock Springs. Interment will follow at 11 a.m. Thursday in the St. Joseph?s Section of Rock Springs Municipal Cemetery.
