As a child, Daniel moved from Rockingham County, Virgina, to Ohio with his parents. He grew up in a German Baptist Brethren family. Dearest friends, oh do not weep,
I am not dead but here do sleep.
Though cold and silent is my bed,
My rest is sweet, my sorrow fled.
